Clear aligners can be used to resolve a number of orthodontic issues, including gaps between the teeth.
If you would like to improve the appearance of your smile, you might be wondering what the most suitable treatment for you is. When it comes to orthodontics, there are a number of options available, such as clear aligners.
Clear aligners can be used to resolve a number of issues, including unwanted gaps, misaligned teeth and problematic bites.
What are Clear Aligners? Â Â
Clear aligners are an orthodontic treatment made from medical grade plastic, and are custom-made for each patients smile.
When you come in for a consultation, your dentist will use specialised equipment to create a 3D digital scan of your teeth, which will then be used to create a customised treatment plan. With the help of this digital scan, your custom aligners will be fabricated in a dental laboratory.
Clear aligners work by applying pressure to the teeth and gradually shifting them into new positions. You will need to change over to a new set of aligners every two weeks to account for the shifting of your teeth.
What issues can it resolve?
Although clear aligners are not suited to all orthodontic issues, the treatment is an effective option in many minor to moderate misalignment cases. Clear aligners are great for the following:
- Crowded teeth
- Gaps between teeth
- Crossbite
- Overbite
- Crooked teeth
- Underbite
- Straightening teeth
What should you know about living with clear aligners?
If you choose to undergo this treatment to close a gap or resolve another issue, it is important that you follow your dentist’s instructions and wear your aligners for the recommended time each day.
We generally recommend that you wear your aligners for 22 hours a day to ensure the best possible results. You should also stick to healthy oral hygiene habits and brush and floss your teeth every day.
You may remove your aligners for eating, drinking, cleaning and for special photographs. Since they are removable, you don’t have to change your diet in any way whilst you undergo treatment.
You’ll have to change your aligners every two weeks or so as recommended by your dentist — it’s worth knowing that you might feel some pressure when you first start wearing a new set of aligners, but this will subside with time.
