Veneers are tooth-coloured coverings that are placed on the front of a tooth. However, they are not the same as other procedures, like crowns, because they only cover the front of the natural teeth. 

The best part of veneers is that they don’t require special care, you just have to commit to a strict oral hygiene routine, being sure to brush at least twice a day and floss once per day to keep them clean and stain-free. Also, you need to be careful when eating certain harder foods. Once you have had your tooth prepared for the veneer, the process is not reversible. In the case that a veneer cracks, it is difficult to repair without having to replace the entire veneer. It is important to not have habits like pen-chewing or nail-biting as these can crack the veneer. Veneers are not a good option for people with poor gum health. In addition, people who grind or clench their teeth are at risk for chipping or cracking their veneers. Lastly, veneers are still susceptible to decay so it is important that you maintain optimal oral health and visit your dentist regularly.

Patients are anesthetized in the mouth for the veneering process. There should be no pain during the procedure once numbness takes effect. With smaller cases (one to four veneers) there will be very little or no discomfort after the numbness subsides. Patients should expect some soreness of the gums and possibly the jaw in cases that involve more veneers. The soreness can typically be alleviated with over-the-counter medications.

Brushing two times each day for two minutes, flossing daily, and wearing a bite guard at night are great ways to protect the veneers. It is also beneficial to avoid eating very hard foods or cracking shells with the front veneers.

The costs covered by your private health insurance depends on the level of your cover. Most basic policies will only cover minor dental procedures such as check-ups and fillings. Where as a higher level of coverage will cover more involved treatments.

However, most policies do not cover cosmetic dental procedures and please also be aware that there may be an additional waiting period before you can claim the cost for dental veneers.
